Finding free web design resources

Creating a website requires all kinds of resources: fonts, photos, and graphics, just to name a few. While there are tons of these resources out there, more often than not they come with a fee. If a client doesn’t have the budget for premium resources, it can be challenging to find free alternatives without sacrificing quality. But don’t worry! There are plenty of free, high-quality resources out there if you know where to look. In this article you will find a collection of websites that provide free web design resources, along with tips for hunting them down.

A note on copyright

One of the most important things to pay attention to when looking for free resources is copyright information. Just because something is listed as free doesn’t mean that it doesn’t come without stipulations. For example, many stock photos require attribution, which means you must include a credit the owner. For many websites, that wouldn’t be very practical. Other resources are limited in how they can be used, such as for personal use only. Make sure to always check the copyright limitations on your resources before using them on a project.

Stock photos

Free stock photography is often one of the most challenging resources to find. Photography can have a major effect on viewers, so it’s important to use high-quality, impactful photos. While premium stock photo sites like Shutterstock or iStock still tend to be the easiest way to find exactly what you’re looking for, there are a number of websites that provide free alternatives.

Fonts

A good font can help bring your website to life. The following sites provide top-notch free fonts.

Icons

There aren’t many websites out there that focus solely on icons, but the following websites do just that.

Graphics

There are any number of graphic resources that may be needed while working on a website. Some examples: backgrounds, textures, user interface elements, icons, wireframe elements, vector graphics - and the list goes on. The following websites provide all of that and more, for free!
